Barbari Goat

Barbari Goat is a small goat breed raised across the Indian subcontinent, particularly in northern India and Pakistan, believed by tradition to descend from goats brought along historic trade routes from the Berbera region of the Horn of Africa, from which the breed's name likely derives. It is distinguished by a compact body and a distinctive spotted or mottled coat, and is valued as a dual-purpose breed for both meat and milk, well suited to the hot, semi-arid climate of much of its range. Because of its small size, prolificacy and tolerance of confinement, Barbari goats are widely kept in intensive stall-fed systems by smallholder farmers on the outskirts of Indian and Pakistani cities, where grazing land is limited. The breed is considered one of the more economically important goat breeds of the region for smallholder livelihoods.
