Phytophthora citrophthora

Fungal Diseases of Crops

Phytophthora citrophthora is a soil-borne oomycete in the family Peronosporaceae that causes brown rot of citrus, marked by gummosis in which lesions around the base of the tree exude sap, along with dark lesions at the soil line, a sour odor, bark cracking, canopy yellowing and, in severe cases, tree collapse from girdling. Besides citrus, it also affects stone fruits, cacao and ornamental plants. Unusually among Phytophthora species, it is most active during the moderate temperatures of spring, fall and winter rather than in warm weather, surviving winters in soil as oospores and on decaying plant material; it can survive below 5 degrees Celsius, grows best between 24 and 28 degrees, and stops growing above 35 degrees.
