Bitter rot of apple

Bitter rot of apple is a fungal disease of apple fruit caused by species within the Colletotrichum acutatum and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complexes, including C. fioriniae, C. godetiae, C. nymphaeae, C. fructicola, C. chrysophilum, C. siamense and C. noveboracense. It produces sunken circular lesions with conical intrusions into the flesh that appear V-shaped when the fruit is cut through the center of a lesion, and it ranks among the most destructive apple fruit diseases in warm, wet climates worldwide.
