Moniliophthora roreri

Moniliophthora roreri is a basidiomycete fungus that causes frosty pod rot, one of the most serious diseases affecting cacao production in Latin America; together with witches' broom disease and black pod rot it forms what is known as the cacao disease trilogy. It causes serious losses in the southwestern parts of South America, spreading through dry, powdery spores carried by water movement, wind or the movement of infected pods, with spread highest during periods of heavy rainfall.
