A fungal disease (Hemileia vastatrix) that produces orange powdery lesions on the underside of coffee leaves, causing defoliation and yield loss in Arabica coffee in particular. It devastated coffee production in Ceylon in the nineteenth century, effectively ending the island's coffee industry and prompting a shift to tea, and a severe epidemic across Central America between 2012 and 2014 caused billions of dollars in losses and displaced hundreds of thousands of coffee workers.

Hemileia vastatrix is a multicellular basidiomycete fungus of the order Pucciniales that causes coffee leaf rust (CLR), a disease affecting the coffee plant. Coffee serves as the obligate host of coffee rust, that is, the rust must have access to and come into physical contact with coffee in order to survive.
