A fungal disease (Puccinia striiformis), also called yellow rust, that produces narrow yellow-orange pustule stripes running along the veins of wheat and barley leaves, favored by cool, moist conditions and capable of spreading rapidly across a region on wind-borne spores. A highly virulent and widely adapted race group first identified around 2000 spread across Europe, Central Asia and Africa over the following two decades, overcoming resistance genes bred into many popular wheat varieties and prompting renewed international rust surveillance alongside the stem rust monitoring built around Ug99.
