A fungal disease (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici) that has caused some of history's most severe wheat famines, producing dark pustules on stems and leaves that disrupt water transport and can destroy a crop within weeks under favorable conditions. The emergence of the highly virulent Ug99 race in Uganda in 1998, capable of overcoming resistance genes bred into most of the world's wheat, triggered a global breeding effort to head off a repeat of historic pandemics.
