Rhizopus arrhizus is a fungus of the family Mucoraceae, identified by sporangiophores that arise from the nodes where its rhizoids form and by a hemispherical columella. It is best known as the most common cause of mucormycosis in humans and occasionally infects other animals, but it is also a recognized plant and postharvest pathogen, causing disease on crops including almonds, apricots, beets, carrots, mangoes, maize, peaches, nectarines and sunflowers, and acting as a secondary rot organism on grapes already damaged by other pathogens.
