Grey Leaf Spot of Corn

Fungal Diseases of Crops

A fungal disease (Cercospora zeae-maydis and Cercospora zeina) that produces narrow, rectangular tan to gray lesions running parallel to the leaf veins of maize, restricting the photosynthetic area available to fill developing ears. It became one of the most significant yield-limiting maize diseases in the United States and sub-Saharan Africa from the 1990s onward, favored by the spread of reduced tillage practices that leave infected crop residue on the soil surface where the fungus survives between seasons.
