Edson Lobato is a Brazilian soil fertility scientist who received the 2006 World Food Prize, shared with A. Colin McClung of the United States and Alysson Paolinelli of Brazil, for helping transform the Cerrado, a vast region of Brazil whose name comes from Portuguese words meaning closed, inaccessible land, into productive cropland.
