Surinder Vasal, born in 1938 in Amritsar in the Indian state of Punjab, is an Indian geneticist and plant breeder who worked with biochemist Evangelina Villegas for 35 years at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center in Mexico to develop quality protein maize in the 1970s, a protein enriched form of maize now used in China, Mexico, parts of Central America and Africa and referred to as miracle maize for its role in easing malnourishment. He and Villegas were jointly awarded the World Food Prize in 2000, and he is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
