Monty Jones (February 5, 1951 to April 28, 2024) was a Sierra Leonean plant breeder and politician who served as his country's Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security. As principal rice breeder at the West Africa Rice Development Association from 1991, he discovered the genetic process for creating New Rice for Africa, or NERICA, a set of rice varieties combining higher yields, shorter growth cycles and higher protein content than their Asian and African parent varieties. He was a co-winner of the 2004 World Food Prize for this work and later served as the first Executive Director of the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, joining in July 2002.
