Badrinarayan Ramulal Barwale (1931 to 2017) was a leading figure in the Indian seed industry who revolutionized farming practices in the Marathwada region of India by producing cheaper, higher yield seeds. After experimenting with a high yield okra hybrid in the 1950s he founded the Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company, known as Mahyco, in 1964, building a network of farmers producing new seed varieties of several crops while providing assistance and loan guarantees that let his team gather feedback and improve yield and quality. He was awarded the World Food Prize in 1998 and India's Padma Bhushan award in 2001.
