Steven Dale Tanksley is an American geneticist, born in 1954, who held the Liberty Hyde Bailey professorship in plant breeding and biometry at Cornell University before founding the company Nature Source Improved Plants, where he is chief technology officer. He built the first molecular maps of the tomato and rice genomes and led the team that achieved the first successful map-based cloning of a gene in a major crop plant in 1993, and his subsequent work used marker-assisted selection to identify useful traits in wild relatives of crop plants for breeding into cultivated varieties.
