Luther Burbank

America's most prolific plant breeder, working from a Santa Rosa garden rather than a laboratory. Burbank introduced more than 800 varieties, including the Burbank potato whose russet sport became the backbone of the American potato industry, the Shasta daisy and the plumcot. He bred by eye, intuition and enormous scale, keeping records so thin that geneticists despaired of him even as they used his plants.
