James E. Womack, born March 30, 1941, is an American biologist and professor at Texas A&M University since 1973, known for pioneering research into the cattle genome. He developed a whole genome cattle-hamster radiation hybrid panel, a tool that advanced cattle genomics and comparative gene mapping between species. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1999 and received the Wolf Prize in Agriculture in 2001, shared with Roger N. Beachy, for using recombinant DNA technology to transform plant and animal science.
