Jack Harlan (1917 to 1998) was an American botanist, agronomist and plant collector who became a leading campaigner for the conservation of crop plant biodiversity. The son of USDA barley breeder Harry Harlan, he was introduced as a teenager to the Russian plant breeding expert Nikolai Vavilov, an encounter that inspired his own career collecting and studying the genetic diversity of cultivated plants.
