George Harrison Shull (1874 to 1954) was an American plant geneticist who played a central role in developing hybrid maize and in establishing the genetic basis of heterosis, the increased vigor often seen in hybrid offspring. Science ran in his family: several of his siblings became scientists in related fields, and his niece Elizabeth Shull Russell was a geneticist elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
