Yuan Longping (1930 to 2021) was a Chinese agronomist and inventor known as the father of hybrid rice for developing the first hybrid rice varieties in the 1970s, part of the Green Revolution in agriculture. Hybrid rice bred from his research has since been grown in dozens of countries across Africa, the Americas and Asia, boosting food security and allowing China to sustain about 20 percent of the global population on roughly 9 percent of the world's arable land, an achievement for which he received the 2004 World Food Prize and the 2004 Wolf Prize in Agriculture.
