William Wolfskill

William Wolfskill, born in 1798 and died in 1866, was an American-born agronomist who became a naturalized Mexican citizen and settled in Los Angeles, California, in the 1830s after an earlier career as a fur trapper. He built one of the region's major agricultural operations, producing some fifty thousand gallons of wine annually at his death, is credited with developing the Valencia orange variety, and helped found California's citrus industry, extending his orchards and vineyards to the Wolfskill Ranch in the Sacramento Valley with his brother John.
