Swapan Kumar Datta, born 1953, is an Indian professor of rice biotechnology specializing in the genetic engineering of indica rice. He developed genetically engineered indica rice from protoplast derived from haploid embryogenic cell suspension culture, created Golden Indica Rice enriched with provitamin A to address malnutrition, and developed ferritin rice with elevated iron content through his research group; India Today recognized him among the top twenty five Indian scientists across all fields of science.
