William James Farrer (1845 to 1906) was an English-born Australian agronomist and plant breeder known as the father of the Australian wheat industry. He originated the Federation strain of wheat, distributed from 1903, whose breeding brought significant improvements to both the quality and the yield of Australia's national wheat harvest.
