Alexandru Barbu Stirbei, born in 1837 and died in 1895, was a Wallachian-born Romanian aristocrat, agriculturalist and politician who established pioneering intensive animal farming and cash-crop operations on his manorial estates of Buftea and Darmanesti. After a brief career in the French army, he returned home to inherit his father's fortune, sat in the Assembly of Deputies, and later served as Romanian Minister of Public Works, Interior, and Finance in the 1880s and 1890s as a member of the Conservative Party.
