Matthew Keller, also spelled Mathew or Mateo Keller, born 1810 in Queenstown, County Cork, Ireland, and died 1881, was an early agriculturalist, vintner and distiller in Los Angeles who arrived after the Mexican-American War and served on the county Board of Supervisors and the Los Angeles Common Council. Recognized as the father of horticulture in Los Angeles, he established the Rising Sun and Los Angeles Vineyards winery in 1852 and pioneered the cultivation of orange trees from Central American and Hawaiian seed in 1853, extending his experiments to other fruit trees as well as cotton, rice, tobacco, castor oil plants and hops.
