John O. Almquist

Animal Sciences

John Olson Almquist (February 10, 1921 to September 6, 2015) earned his doctoral degree from the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences and became a pioneer of dairy reproductive physiology there, establishing the college's Dairy Breeding Research Center in 1949. He found that adding antibiotics to bull semen reduced bacterial growth and improved fertility, and discovered that milk could be used as a medium for preserving bull semen, advances that improved dairy cattle artificial insemination. He received the Wolf Prize in Agriculture in 1981 for this early work.
