Nevin S. Scrimshaw

Nevin Stewart Scrimshaw, born January 20, 1918, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and died February 8, 2013, was an American food scientist and Institute Professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who devoted his career to addressing nutritional deficiencies in developing countries. He developed nutritional supplements aimed at protein, iodine and iron deficiencies and wrote more than twenty books and hundreds of academic articles on human nutrition and food science over his career. He founded MIT's Department of Nutrition and Food Science, the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama, and the Nevin Scrimshaw International Nutrition Foundation, and he received the World Food Prize in 1991 after earlier being awarded the Bolton L. Corson Medal in 1976; he died on a farm in Thornton, New Hampshire, at the age of 95.
