Enos J. Perry was an extension specialist in dairy husbandry at Rutgers University from 1923 to 1956 who brought artificial insemination of dairy cattle into practical use in the United States. After observing a Danish cooperative that provided cattle breeding services by artificial insemination, Perry organized the first artificial insemination cooperative in the United States near Clinton, New Jersey, inseminating its first cow on May 16, 1938. His 1945 book The Artificial Insemination of Farm Animals became the standard reference on the subject, guiding thousands of extension workers and students, and his cooperative model ended the need for dairy farms to keep dangerous breeding bulls on hand.
