Laura Chenel is an American cheesemaker based in Sonoma County, California, credited with pioneering French-style fresh goat cheese production in the United States. Her creamery, Laura Chenel Chevre, grew to sell more than two million pounds of cheese a year after chef Alice Waters of Chez Panisse began ordering fifty pounds of her chevre a week in 1981; the French dairy company Rians acquired the creamery's equipment and operations in 2006, though Chenel kept her own herd of about 500 goats.
