Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend (1674 to 1738), was a British Whig statesman who served as Secretary of State for the Northern Department from 1714 to 1717 and again from 1721 to 1730, directing British foreign policy alongside his brother-in-law, prime minister Robert Walpole. He became known as Turnip Townshend for his strong interest in farming field turnips on his own estate and for his role in the British Agricultural Revolution.
