Asmu, known formally as Asmoe Tjiptodarsono and whose year of birth is unknown, died in the Indonesian mass killings of 1965 and 1966 following the September 30 Movement, with sources placing his death either in November 1965 or March 1966. He was a leader, theoretician and chief agricultural expert of the Indonesian Communist Party and headed the party-affiliated Peasants Front of Indonesia during the mid-1960s, advocating for land reform and redistribution. His research attempted to show that in many villages under ten percent of so-called feudal families owned more than half the land, and from 1961 to 1965 he maintained an influential question-and-answer column on agrarian issues in the party newspaper.
