All Fibre and Other Industrial Crops

Crops grown for a non-food raw material: plant fibre for textiles and cordage (cotton, flax, hemp, jute, sisal), a natural dye (indigo), latex for rubber (rubber tree), and a leaf grown for its nicotine content and processed rather than eaten (tobacco). FAO own Indicative Crop Classification keeps fibre crops and other industrial crops as two separate groups; they are merged here as a browsing convenience, named openly as such, because this atlas carries too few members in either alone to warrant two headings. Belongs here: a crop whose harvested product is a raw material for manufacturing rather than a food. Does not belong here: a crop grown for an edible oil, held under Oilcrops, even where the same plant also yields fibre, such as cotton own seed oil, which is a minor secondary product here.
