A tuber crop (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius) native to South and Southeast Asia, grown for its large, starchy corm, which can weigh several kilograms and is a significant subsistence and cash crop across India, Southeast Asia and parts of the Pacific. Its raw tissue contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause intense irritation if eaten unprocessed, so the corm must be properly cooked or otherwise treated before consumption. The crop is valued for high yields per unit area compared with many other tropical root crops and tolerates intercropping with trees and other plants, making it common in home gardens and mixed cropping systems.
