A cereal grain, Eleusine coracana, domesticated in the Ethiopian highlands of East Africa, from where its cultivation spread to South Asia in ancient times. Finger millet takes its common name from the finger-like spikes of its seed head, and it is valued agriculturally for an unusually long storage life among cereals, historically making it a preferred crop for famine reserves in parts of East Africa. It remains a staple grain in Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and other parts of East Africa, and in South India, where it is known as ragi and is notable among cereals for its relatively high calcium content.
