Nagpuri Buffalo

The Nagpuri is a breed of water buffalo originating in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, India, well adapted to the area's harsh semi-arid conditions and known locally by several other names, including Berari, Gaorani and Purnathadi. It is predominantly black with white markings on the face, legs and tail, distinguished by long, flat horns that curve backward almost to the shoulders; males stand about 145 centimetres and weigh around 525 kilograms, with females somewhat smaller. It yields an average of 1,039 kilograms of milk per lactation with a high fat content of 8.25 percent, tolerates temperatures as high as 47 degrees Celsius without a drop in milk production or fertility, and males are also used, more slowly than cattle, for draught work.
