Ronald Lewis Phillips (1940 to 2023) was an American biologist and regents professor at the University of Minnesota who was the first to regenerate whole corn plants from cells grown in laboratory culture, a breakthrough that opened the way to modern crop biotechnology by making it possible to genetically modify corn and other cereal grains through cell culture methods. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1985 and to the National Academy of Sciences in 1991, and he received the Wolf Prize in Agriculture in 2006/2007.
