Agricultural diversification is the practice of a farming system, farm or region broadening the range of crops or livestock it produces, rather than depending on one or a small number of commodities, undertaken to spread market and weather risk, improve soil and pest outcomes, and open additional income sources for a farming household. It stands as a general economic strategy against which monoculture and narrow cash-crop specialization are the contrasting, higher-risk alternative.
